Professor Giovanni Ferrante: in Memoriam

It is with deep sorrow that the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons acknowledges the passing of Professor Giovanni Ferrante (Naples, Italy). Professor Ferrante was one of the co-founders of ESTS, a Past-President (1995-1996) and a Honorary Member (Zurich 2004).

With his passing, one of the pillars and founding fathers of Italian thoracic surgery has passed away. A student of Professor Ettore Ruggieri, he was appointed chair of general surgery in 1971 and subsequently of thoracic surgery in 1974 at the University of Naples Federico II. During his brilliant academic career, he founded and became President of the ESTS, the SIET, as well as president of the SICT, FONICAP, and the Neapolitan Society of Surgery. Through his tireless public relations work, he spearheaded the internationalization of Italian surgery, culminating in the brilliant organization of the Siena Congress in 1994, which effectively saved the European Society.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
