Prof.Anthony Linegar: in Memoriam

It is with deep sorrow that the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons acknowledges the passing of Prof. Anthony Linegar.

Professor Anthony Linegar MB ChB, FCS(SA) (Cardiothor), PhD was Head of Thoracic Surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town, and an Affiliated Lecturer and Associate Professor at the University of the Free State.

After specialising in cardiothoracic surgery at UCT in 1992 and training in thoracic surgery at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, he dedicated his career to advancing thoracic surgery and critical care in South Africa. His work focused on thoracic oncology, oesophageal disease, inflammatory lung disease, and the development of thoracic surgical services, particularly in central South Africa, where he completed his PhD in 2008.

He was an active contributor to research, education, and professional societies, serving in leadership roles within national and international cardiothoracic and lung cancer organisations.

His commitment to patient care, surgical development, and academic excellence leaves a lasting legacy.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this time of profound loss.
