Context and Aim of the Programme With the increasing number and complexity of clinical trials focused on resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), it is essential for thoracic surgeons to engage actively in the discussions, design, conduct and leadership of these trials. However, there are still clinical trial knowledge and capability gaps among young thoracic surgeon fellows. This program aims to address these gaps by putting together a complete clinical trial curriculum for surgeons, from theoretical knowledge to hands-on experience. Total Duration of Fellowship: 6 months Structure: The programme is structured into three main components, to be executed in the following order: 1. Theoretical Curriculum: The objective of this curriculum is to equip fellows with a robust understanding of statistical methods to facilitate understanding clinical trial design, analysis and reporting. Duration: Several modules are available and to be completed during the 6 months of the fellowship. 2. Internship at AstraZeneca R&D Department: This segment will provide fellows with insights into the pharmaceutical industry's perspective and practice in clinical trial conduct, including how clinical trials are designed and executed. The fellows will have the opportunity to shadow professionals and may rotate through various departments. Duration: 3 months Budget: Travel, accommodation, and salary 3. Preceptorship at TEST clinical trials centre: This component aims to give surgeons hands-on experience in clinical trial management. The fellow will spend time in a clinical trial centre of the TEST network, at a large hospital that specializes in running trials for resectable NSCLC (preferably). Ideally, the fellow will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the surgical team of the hosting hospital to enhance her/his knowledge of lung cancer surgery management. Duration: 3 months Budget: Travel, accommodation, and salary Total Budget: €42,000 Euro (7000 Euro/month) Summary Total duration of fellowship: 6 months Theoretical Curriculum (to be completed during the 6 months of the fellowship) Internship at AstraZeneca R&D Department (3 months) Preceptorship at TEST clinical trials center (3 months) Eligibility criteria: Resident in later training status / early attending physician / junior faculty Basic Good Clinical Practice, ICH-GCP, ideally also advanced course ESTS member Required documents from applicants: Letter of motivation CV Support letter from department chief Deadlines 23 Oct 2026 – Deadline to submit a letter of intent to formally apply 27 Nov 2026 – Deadline to submit all required documents Submit all documents to Zlatka Mitreva, zmitreva@kenes.com Review and Confirmation The scientific review committee will review applications over the subsequent four to six (4-6) weeks.
