Background

Johnny Moons is a dedicated nurse and clinical data manager whose career spans more than four decades of unwavering commitment to thoracic oncology and patient care. He received his nursing diploma in Hospital Nursing from the Provinciaal Hoger Instituut voor Verpleegkunde in Hasselt, Belgium, followed by a Master of Science in Medical and Social Sciences & Hospital Management from the Faculty of Medicine at KU Leuven. He later completed postgraduate studies in Business Administration and in Clinical Nutrition, enriching his interprofessional approach to clinical care. Johnny began his nursing career in 1986, working in geriatric, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, and oncologic surgery units, gaining practical experience with a diverse range of patient populations. Since 1995, he has been a Registered Nurse and Data Manager in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, where his knowledge of clinical nutrition and enhanced recovery protocols has influenced best practices and contributed to international databases and research collaborations. He is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS), the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN), and the Esophagectomy Complication Consensus Group (ECCG), among others. His leadership extends to roles such as Board Member of the Nurses and Allied Health Professionals Working Group and the Database Committee at ESTS. Johnny’s principal interests lie in the data management and nursing care of esophageal and lung pathologies, with a special focus on Enhanced Recovery protocols in thoracic surgery. His work continues to bridge clinical practice, evidence-based research, and interprofessional collaboration, making a lasting impact on the field.
