Prof. Nuria Novoa Assumes Presidency of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS)

The ESTS Board of Directors are delighted to announce that Prof. Nuria Novoa has taken the helm as the President of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) for the term 2024–2025. Prof. Novoa’s outstanding expertise, dedication, and collaborative approach promise an exciting chapter for our esteemed society.

Prof. Novoa has previously served as Chair of the ESTS Committee for Learning Affairs from 2021-2024. Her leadership ensured a continuous and diverse range of high-quality educational programs for the thoracic community. Prof. Novoa is also a dedicated member and champion of the ESTS Women in General Thoracic Surgery Committee. Her commitment to diversity and inclusion drives initiatives that promote gender equity, mentorship, and professional growth for women in our field.

A Trailblazer in General Thoracic Surgery

Prof. Novoa’s journey in general thoracic surgery began in 1994 when she qualified as a thoracic surgeon at the Gregorio Marañon University Hospital in Madrid, Spain. Her commitment to excellence led her to pursue a Ph.D. degree at the University of Salamanca, which she successfully obtained in 2001. Prof. Novoa is currently the Head of Department of General Thoracic Surgery, University Hospital Puerta de Hierro - Majadahonda, Madrid. Spain, Associate Professor of Thoracic Surgery, University of Salamanca and Associate researcher at the Biomedical Institute of Salamanca, IBSAL

A Career Dedicated to Patient Care and Research

Throughout her career, Prof. Novoa has been deeply involved in clinical practice, research, and education. Her contributions extend beyond the operating room:

• Academic Excellence: Since 2005, Prof. Novoa has actively contributed to the academic field, serving as a part-time professor of Surgery at the University of Salamanca. Her passion for teaching and mentorship has left an indelible mark on aspiring surgeons.

• Research and Publications: Prof. Novoa’s research endeavours have resulted in over 150 published papers. Her work has significantly advanced our understanding of thoracic surgery, patient outcomes, and quality of life.

• Leadership Roles: Prof. Novoa’s leadership journey within ESTS began with her appointment in 2014 as Chair of the ESTS QoL and Patient Safety Ad hoc Committee. Prof. Novoa was subsequently appointed as ESTS Director in 2017, and as Director of Education in the Learning Affairs committee in 2021. Her dedication to enhancing educational programs and fostering collaboration has been instrumental in shaping the future of general thoracic surgery.
