It is the presence of blood in the pleural cavity. It can appear alone of associated with air. Massive hemothoraces normally indicate important lung lacerations or heart and great vessels injuries. The rest are normally secondary to small bleeders. Up to 90% of hemothoraces are resolved with chest tube placement, however if large amounts of blood drain through the chest tube, surgery may be required.
